Qualia and the Redness of Red
The redness of red is philosophy’s most stubborn intuition pump. No matter how completely we describe the neurophysiology of colour vision โ the cone cells, the opponent processes, the V4 activations โ something seems to be left out: the subjective experience of seeing red itself.
This residual something is what philosophers call qualia: the felt qualities of experience, the “what it is like” that Thomas Nagel argued cannot be captured by objective description.
The Explanatory Gap
Joseph Levine called it the explanatory gap. We can explain why certain wavelengths of light trigger certain neural responses, and why those responses correlate with certain behaviours. But why should there be any experience at all? Why doesn’t all the information processing happen in the dark?
This is not a failure of current neuroscience. It is a structural feature of the problem. Even a complete physical map would leave the question untouched โ because the question is not about what physical processes occur, but about why they feel like anything.
The Knowledge Argument
Frank Jackson’s Mary thought experiment makes the point vivid. Mary is a brilliant scientist who has lived her entire life in a black-and-white room. She knows every physical fact about colour vision. The day she steps outside and sees red for the first time, does she learn something new?
If yes, then there are facts โ facts about what red looks like โ that are not physical facts. If no, then we must explain why seeing red feels like learning something new even when it isn’t.
Jackson himself eventually recanted, but many philosophers still find the intuition compelling. The thought experiment persists because it captures something real about the limits of third-person description.
Functionalism’s Difficulty
Functionalism holds that mental states are defined by their functional roles โ by what they do, not by what they are made of. A pain is whatever plays the pain-role in a cognitive system, whether implemented in neurons or silicon.
The difficulty is that functionalism seems to leave qualia out. Two systems could be functionally identical while differing in their experiential qualities โ or so the objection runs. Ned Block’s China Brain thought experiment asks us to imagine the entire population of China coordinating to simulate a brain. Would the system have qualia? Functionalism says yes; intuition resists.
Where I Stand
I do not think the hard problem is unsolvable. But I think it will not be solved by the methods that have worked for other problems in cognitive science. It requires a revision not just of our theories but of the conceptual framework within which we pose the question.
The redness of red is not a puzzle to be solved within the current paradigm. It is a sign that the paradigm needs expanding.
